Successful People - Napoleon Hill

Successful People
Napoleon Hill

What makes people successful?  This question has mystified people since humans first became dissatisfied with cave dwellings and tried to find some way to make life more comfortable.  Perhaps the following comparisons between the characteristics of a person who fails and a successful person will help answer the question.

Successful people know precisely what they desire, have a plan for getting it, believe in their ability to get it, and devote a major portion of their time to acquiring it.  The person who fails has no definite purpose in life, believes that all success is the result of "luck," and moves on his or her own initiative only when forced to do so.

Successful people think before they speak.  They weigh their words carefully.  And they emphasize their likes concerning people, minimizing their dislikes or not mentioning them at all.  The unsuccessful person does just the opposite.  He or she speaks first, thinks later.  His or her words bring only regret and embarrassment and cost him or her irretrievable benefits because of the resentment they engender.

Successful people express opinions only after having informed themselves so they can do so intelligently. The person who fails expresses opinion on subjects about which he or she has little or no knowledge.

Successful people budget time, income and expenditures.  They live within their means.  The person who fails squanders time and income with a contemptuous disregard for their value.

Successful people take a keen interest in people, especially those with whom they have something in common, and cultivate a bond of friendship with them.  The unsuccessful person cultivates only those from whom he or she wants something.

Successful people are open-minded and tolerant on all subjects, toward all people.  The person who fails has a closed mind, steeped in intolerance, which shuts him or her off from the recognition of favorable opportunities and the friendly cooperation of others.

Successful people keep abreast of the times and make it an important responsibility to know what is going on, not only in their own business, profession or community, but also throughout the entire world. The unsuccessful person concerns him or herself only with his or her immediate needs, requiring them by whatever means are available--fair or foul.

Successful people keep their minds and outlook on life positive at all times.  They recognize that the space they occupy in the world and the success they enjoy depend upon the quantity and quality of service they render.  They make it a habit to render more service than they promise.   The person who fails looks for "something for nothing" or something under the table, which he or she did not earn.  And when he or she fails to get it, he or she blames the greed of others.

Successful people have a keen respect for their Creator and express it frequently through prayers and deeds of helpfulness to others.  The unsuccessful believes in nothing but his or her own desire for food and shelter and seeks those at the expense of others when and where he or she can.

All in all, there is a big difference in both the words and the deeds of the successful person and the person who fails. But all people are where they are and what they are because of their own mental attitudes toward themselves and others.

Never let one failure from the past hold you back in the future

Never let one failure from the past hold you back in the future

“As a man was passing the elephants, he suddenly stopped, confused by the fact that these huge creatures were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg. No chains, no cages. It was obvious that the elephants could, at anytime, break away from their bonds but for some reason, they did not.
He saw a trainer nearby and asked why these animals just stood there and made no attempt to get away. ‘Well,’ trainer said, ‘when they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it’s enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free.’
The man was amazed. These animals could at any time break free from their bonds but because they believed they couldn’t, they were stuck right where they were.”

Damaged souls still have worth

Damaged souls still have worth

“A shop owner placed a sign above his door that said: ‘Puppies For Sale.’
Signs like this always have a way of attracting young children, and to no surprise, a boy saw the sign and approached the owner; ‘How much are you going to sell the puppies for?’ he asked.
The store owner replied, ‘Anywhere from $30 to $50.’
The little boy pulled out some change from his pocket. ‘I have $2.37,’ he said. ‘Can I please look at them?’
The shop owner smiled and whistled. Out of the kennel came Lady, who ran down the aisle of his shop followed by five teeny, tiny balls of fur.
One puppy was lagging considerably behind. Immediately the little boy singled out the lagging, limping puppy and said, ‘What’s wrong with that little dog?’
The shop owner explained that the veterinarian had examined the little puppy and had discovered it didn’t have a hip socket. It would always limp. It would always be lame.
The little boy became excited. ‘That is the puppy that I want to buy.’
The shop owner said, ‘No, you don’t want to buy that little dog. If you really want him, I’ll just give him to you.’
The little boy got quite upset. He looked straight into the store owner’s eyes, pointing his finger, and said;
‘I don’t want you to give him to me. That little dog is worth every bit as much as all the other dogs and I’ll pay full price. In fact, I’ll give you $2.37 now, and 50 cents a month until I have him paid for.’
The shop owner countered, ‘You really don’t want to buy this little dog. He is never going to be able to run and jump and play with you like the other puppies.’
To his surprise, the little boy reached down and rolled up his pant leg to reveal a badly twisted, crippled left leg supported by a big metal brace. He looked up at the shop owner and softly replied, ‘Well, I don’t run so well myself, and the little puppy will need someone who understands!'”

Stop wasting your time complaining

Stop wasting your time complaining

“People visit a wise man complaining about the same problems over and over again. One day, he decided to tell them a joke and they all roared with laughter.
After a few minutes, he told them the same joke and only a few of them smiled.
Then he told the same joke for a third time, but no one laughed or smiled anymore.
The wise man smiled and said: ‘You can’t laugh at the same joke over and over. So why are you always crying about the same problem?'”

Don’t say something you regret out of anger

Don’t say something you regret out of anger

“There once was a little boy who had a very bad temper. His father decided to hand him a bag of nails and said that every time the boy lost his temper, he had to hammer a nail into the fence.
On the first day, the boy hammered 37 nails into that fence.
The boy gradually began to control his temper over the next few weeks, and the number of nails he was hammering into the fence slowly decreased. He discovered it was easier to control his temper than to hammer those nails into the fence.
Finally, the day came when the boy didn’t lose his temper at all. He told his father the news and the father suggested that the boy should now pull out a nail every day he kept his temper under control.
The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence.
‘You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won’t matter how many times you say I’m sorry, the wound is still there.'”

Laziness won’t get you anywhere

Laziness won’t get you anywhere

“In ancient times, a king had his men place a boulder on a roadway. He then hid in the bushes, and watched to see if anyone would move the boulder out of the way. Some of the king’s wealthiest merchants and courtiers passed by and simply walked around it.
Many people blamed the King for not keeping the roads clear, but none of them did anything about getting the stone removed.
One day, a peasant came along carrying vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to push the stone out of the way. After much pushing and straining, he finally managed.
After the peasant went back to pick up his vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and note from the King explain that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the road.”

Why You Should Make It A Habit To Visualise Your Ideal Future

Visualise A Favourable Future
It's easy to focus on what is wrong in your life than trying to envisage a better future because your problems are real.
To imagine a future you can't see poses a challenge. However, it's worth devoting more time to visualise what you want to experience as I'm about to outline.
Before we proceed, I wish to render a caveat in case you dismiss this as another touchy feel good article. Visualisation without action is futile because mental preparation and inspired action are both necessary to bring to life your desires.
Visualisation is the seed fertilised in the mind, whereby action is the flowering plant that blossoms. One needs the other to manifest your goals and dreams.
I'm not articulating something new and apologise if you came looking for a revelation. Similarly, I can't assure you that a new idea will change your life either. What I can offer is a message that highlights why visualisation is a powerful tool to improve your life.
It's important to visualise a favourable future instead of focussing on circumstances that annoy you. Many people act impulsively without giving any thought to what they really want. They constantly think about what they don't want and are disheartened when it shows up not as expected. This is because they haven't devoted enough time or energy to get clear on their desires.
It was Napoleon Hill who wrote in The Master Key to Riches: "Mental attitude is important because it converts the brain into the equivalent of an electromagnet which attracts the counterpart of one's dominating thoughts, aims and purposes. It also attracts the counterpart of one's fears, worries and doubts."
People spend more time than necessary observing what is wrong in their life instead of imagining what their ideal future could be.
Use Windows Of Opportunity To Bathe Your Mind
Hebbian Theory describes the mechanism for synaptic plasticity stating: "Neurons that fire together, wire together." Brain cells that communicate frequently are strengthened through their connection. Messages travelling along the same pathway in the brain often become faster and more efficient.
This is beneficial for several reasons, least of which means what you give enough attention to is reinforced in the brain through its cellular network.
Therefore, if you give attention to what is unwanted in your life, those same cellular structures are strengthened and become efficient unless you change your thought patterns.
"Any idea that is held in the mind, emphasized, feared or reverenced, begins at once to clothe itself in the most convenient and appropriate physical form that is available," states Napoleon Hill.
I realise this is easier said than done. It has taken me many years of practice and drawbacks to consider myself capable of directing my thoughts. However, through diligent practice and regular meditation, I am more aware of my thoughts instead of allowing them to control me.
Certain times of the day such as early mornings and late evenings can be conducive to visualisation since the mind is less agitated then. Think of these times as windows of opportunity to bathe your mind with images and ideas to create your ideal future. The right time of the day helps in nourishing your mind with the right impressions.
Likewise, if you are stressed, hungry or tired, try not to wrestle with your thoughts since you are unlikely to succeed.
"While a certain amount of vision is necessary, on the other hand it must be remembered that we are dealing with a power that is like the soil of the ground, which will produce the plant when we plant seed. It does not matter if we have never before seen a plant like the one that is to be made for us. Our thought is the seed and mind is the soil. We are always planting and harvesting. All that we need to do is to plant only that which we want to harvest," wrote the founder of Science of Mind magazine Ernest S. Holmes.
Many New Age authors of the early 20th century spoke of the importance of visualisation, including: Ernest Holmes, Napoleon Hill, James Allen, Norman Vincent Peale, Wallace D Wattles, Neville Goddard and Ralph Waldo Emerson.
Even the great Stoic philosophers of ancient Greece spoke of training the mind to harness its potential. The most successful amongst us know that imagination is the strongest faculty of the mind.
Albert Einstein devoted many hours to conceive of intricate mathematical formulas. Author Walter Isaacson writes in Einstein: His Life and Universe: "How did he get his ideas? "I'm enough of an artist to draw freely on my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world."
In a similar vein, it was the great Italian Renaissance genius Leonardo da Vinci who spent countless hours visualising his inventions before they came to life. Da Vinci referred to his visualisation process as, "sapere vedere" which translates to: "knowing how to see."
Form A Mental Picture Of An Ideal Future
The power of imagination is a powerful mental ability to create one's future. However, to take advantage of it you must devote consistent time and effort to develop your mental powers so it becomes laser focused.
The British philosophical writer James Allen wrote in As a Man Thinketh: "A man's mind may be likened to a garden, which may be intelligently cultivated or allowed to run wild; but whether cultivated or neglected, it must, and will, bring forth. If no useful seeds are put into it, then an abundance of useless weed seeds will fall therein, and will continue to produce their kind."
Visualisation requires time, patience and diligence and is something world renowned creators and thinkers engage in often. They apply laser-like focus to envisioning an idea until it comes to life.
Prayer is a form of visualisation, so too are your words, so it makes sense to use your creative powers to visualise your future. It's of no use bemoaning your current situation in the hope of creating a different outcome.
I liken it to travelling on a train headed in one direction before realising you want to go in the other direction. You notice a train approaching in the distance and decide to disembark in order to catch it.
And so it is with visualisation. Avoid giving your attention to what you're unhappy with in your life. Do not talk or write about it. Rather, focus on what you want to create by setting aside as little as five minutes a day to visual it.
James Allen says: "A particular train of thought persisted in, be it good or bad cannot fail to produce its results on the character and circumstances. A man cannot directly choose his circumstances, but he can choose his thoughts, and so indirectly, yet surely, shape his circumstances."
Many great thinkers used daydreaming to enhance their creative abilities. They sat in their favourite chair and allowed their minds to wander. Some took afternoon naps. In the moments preceding the nap, they visualised a scene or a problem and drifted off, awakening later with a solution. I often take regular naps in the afternoon and have noticed that my greatest insights arise following a twenty minute nap.
What you wish to bring to life should be first visualised and cultivated in the mind until it feels real. For the cynics, this is not positive thinking either, but redirecting the same mental energy you devote to your problems towards a better outcome.
Use the power of visualisation and emotions to form a mental picture of your ideal future.
It is often said we use ten percent of our minds. This is because we haven't developed the understanding to create our lives via our thoughts. By harnessing the power of your thoughts, you can train your mind to focus intently on what you want to create and play with the ideas, perhaps changing them before they manifest into reality.
Take consistent action to support your visualisations. Remember, visualisation and right action work in harmony with one another. On their own, are merely a diluted fantasy.
Harness the power of your conscious and subconscious mind and you will undoubtedly create a powerful future worth living.
To live a remarkable life, you must take consistent action in spite of your fears and doubts. Download a FREE copy of my motivational eBook, NAVIGATE LIFE and embark upon your journey of greatness today!

Understanding Your Conscious Mind

Your conscious mind is your objective or thinking mind. It has no memory, and it can only hold one thought at a time. This mind has four essential functions.
First, it identifies incoming information. This is information received through any of the the six senses: sight, sound, smell, taste, touch, or feeling. Your conscious mind is continually observing and categorizing what is going on around you.
To illustrate, imagine that you are walking along the sidewalk and you decide to cross the street. You step off the curb. At that moment, you hear the roar of an automobile engine. You immediately turn and look in the direction of the moving automobile to identify the sound and where it is coming from. This is the first function.
The second function of your conscious mind is comparison. The information about the car that you have seen and heard goes immediately to your subconscious mind. There, it is compared with all of your previously stored information and experiences with moving automobiles.
If the car, for example, is a block away, and moving at thirty miles per hour, your subconscious memory bank will tell you that there is no danger and that you can continue walking.
If, on the other hand, the car is moving toward you at sixty miles per hour and is only 100 yards away, you will get a “danger” message that will stimulate further action on your part.
The third function of your conscious mind is analysis, and analysis always precedes the fourth function, deciding.
Your conscious mind functions very much like a binary computer, performing two functions: It accepts or rejects data in making choices and decisions. It can deal with only one thought at a time, positive or negative, “yes” or “no.” This is why people who adopt positive thinking lifestyles regularly read inspirational quotes. Our single track minds can only entertain one idea at a time, so keeping it occupied with uplifting material has the power to block negative thoughts.
Positive affirmations are also very useful for keeping our brains occupied with pleasant and empowering thoughts or visualizations.
It is continually sorting impressions, deciding which are relevant to you and which are not.
So, you are walking across the street, you hear the roar of the moving automobile and you see that it is bearing down on you. Because of your knowledge of the speed of moving vehicles, you analysis tells you you are in danger and that some decision is required. you first question is, “Do I get out of the way? Yes or no?”
If the decision is “yes,” then your next is, “Do I jump forward? Yes or no?” If the decision is “no,” because of cross traffic, then you next question is, “Do I jump backward? Yes or no?”
If your decision is “yes,” this message is instantly transmitted to your subconscious mind and in a split second, your whole body jumps back out of the way, with no additional thought or decision on your part.
To get a better understanding of the conscious vs subconscious mind, be sure to read my follow-up post, “Subconscious Mind Power Explained.” In it, we’ll discuss the deepest section of your thinking process where behaviors, fears, and habits are formed.

Systematize Your Business Activities

Your business will be successful, generating steady, predictable sales and cash flow, to the exact degree to which you develop systems that put as much of your business on autopilot as possible.
A system is a step-by-step process, from beginning to end, that you use to ensure consistency and dependable performance in every area.
Every new business or business activity requires tremendous time, effort, expense, and even “genius” to learn and develop for the first time. But once the system has been developed for the first time, through trial and error, it can eventually be systematized to the point where the business activities can be carried out by ordinary people.
Until a business activity is systematized, it exists largely in the mind of the individual who knows how to do it. As a result, it cannot be dup0licated or replicated. If the person who knows how to do the job is not there, the business can eventually grind to a halt.

The Systems You Need

1. Lead Generation

You need a proven system of marketing and advertising, and promotion that generates a steady stream of qualified leads, whether phoning your people of business, responding on the Internet, or personally coming into your store to buy your product or service. Without this continuous and predictable stream of leads, your sales and revenues will dry up and your cash flow will slow to a trickle, threatening the survival of your business.

2. Lead Conversion

You need a proven sales system to convert interested prospects into buying customers. This system begins with a sales script that every customer service representative and salesperson uses from the first contact with the prospect through to the completed sale.
The use of a preplanned sales script can triple your sales almost overnight. By using a sales script, each person who answers the phone, calls on a customer, or greets a customer walking in the door knows exactly what to say from the first greeting through to the final purchase.
Your sales system will be developed as the result of trial and error. As you evaluate your sales process, you will find that there are things that you do and say that are effective and others that are not. Over time you will smooth out the rough spots in your sales process, machining and polishing the words and actions so that you turn interested prospects into buying customers over and over again.

3. Production of the Product or Service

You need a proven system, from the beginning to end, for producing the product or service that you have sold to the customer. The this proven system will ensure consistency of quality, ease of operation, efficiency of activity, and continually lower costs of production and delivery.

4. Delivery System

You need a step-by-step system to fulfill orders and deliver the product or service to the customer in a timely fashion. This system enables you to get your product or service to the customer quickly and efficiently with minimum delays and with a high level of quality

5. Service Systems

you need written policies and procedures for follow-up service to each of your customers, including established ways to handle customer needs and complaints, to generate additional sales, to keep in regular customer contact, to elicit referrals and recommendations from satisfied customers to new customers, and to alert your customers of new products and services that they may be interested in buying.

6. Accounting Systems

You need smoothly functioning accounting systems that track every penny of revenue and expense coming into or moving out of business. Fortunately, there are computer programs for small and large business that you can use to keep track of all financial flows in your business so you will always know your proper financial status.

7. Hiring, Training, and Personnel Systems

You need written systems that clearly describe each job and how it is to be done. In addition, you need systems for training, development, and personnel relations. each person who works for you must know exactly what he or she is expected to do and to what standard of quality. Your employees must understand the terms and conditions of their jobs, what is deemed unsatisfactory performance, and what are grounds for termination . They must know exactly what they are entitled to in terms of medical insurance, sick pay, vacation days, and other key elements of the work experience.

7 Principles to Maximize Your Profits in Any Market

7 Principles to Maximize Your Profits in Any Market

Fortunately, based on our work with more than ten thousand businesses, of all sizes, in 55 countries, Mark Thompson and I have discovered seven essential factors to help you maximize your profits in any market, including today.
We have written a simple, powerful, practical book containing these proven principles and strategies that anyone can use to increase their sales and profitability immediately, in virtually any business.
We have discovered that there are seven essential elements of high profit businesses.  In times of turbulence and rapid change, when all bets are off in the current economy, it is essential that you come back to these seven principles over and over again.  Here they are.

Principle One:  Become a Great Leader

The fact is that the best businesses have the best leaders, at every level.  The job of the leader is to establish the vision, values, mission, purpose and goals of the company.  If the leader is not absolutely clear about each one of these, it is not possible for anyone else in the company to be clear about them either.
The leader’s job is to lead.  It is to make the critical decisions that determine the fate and future of the business.  The job of the leader is to be clear about what he or she wants to accomplish and then get everyone in the company focused on that end goal.
The leader must be goal-oriented.  He/She must have clear, specific written goals and plans to achieve each critical business objective, especially those of sales, cash flow and profitability.
The leader must be result-oriented.  He must focus the limited resources of the company on those areas where the greatest results are possible.
In addition, you must be people-oriented, solution-oriented, sales-oriented, and cash flow-oriented. These are the requirements of leadership in a turbulent business in a tough market economy.

Principle Two:  Develop a Great Business Plan

The process of developing a business plan forces you to think through every critical element that will determine your business success.  You must have a plan for selecting your products and services, developing your marketing, selecting the right people, getting the money you need, designing your sales process, arranging for distribution, service and collection of payments, and many other factors.
Especially, you must be absolutely clear about the critical numbers in your business.  There is always one number that is more indicative and predictive of your success than any other and you must decide what it is.  It may be number of sales, size of sales, profitability of sales, number of repeat purchases per customer, or rate of growth.  There are thirty-five different measures that may be applicable to your business and you must be absolutely clear about which measure is most important to you.

Principle Three:  Surround Yourself with Great People

Your ability to interview, select, hire and deploy excellent people is the control valve on your success in business.  Fortunately, you can become excellent at the process of finding and keeping good people with a little instruction, guidance and practice.
The best companies have the best people.  The second best companies have the second best people.  The third best companies are on their way out of business.  Sometimes, the selection or de-selection of a single person can have a major difference on your business results.

Principle Four:  Offer a Great Product or Service

This is perhaps the most important element of business success.  The product or service must be truly excellent.  It must cause customers to say, upon using your product or service, that, “This is a great product!”
This is where the rubber meets the road.  This is where your business intelligence most shows itself.  This is where you demonstrate that you are on the high road to greater sales and profitability.  It is when you can continually focus on making your product or service so attractive and helpful that people literally want to tear it out of your hands.
Fortunately, most products start off as average or below average.  They are then improved over time, making them more and more attractive and desirable to more and more customers until people start to say, “This is a great product!”  This is one of the most important strategies and skills that you learn in our book.

Principle Five:  Develop a Great Marketing Plan

In reality, all strategy is marketing strategy.  The key to success or failure in your business, once you have an excellent product or service to sell, is to attract more qualified prospects to your offerings.
Your marketing plan must position your product or service as the most desirable and attractive of all similar products or services available in your market at this time.  You must practice specialization, differentiation, segmentation, and concentration.  You and your team must be absolutely excellent, every single day, at getting the phone to ring, at getting more and more people to call you and contact you to learn more about your products and services.
Your marketing plan will determine your success or failure as much, if not more, than any other single factor.

Principle Six:  Perfect a Great Sales Process

The rule is that, “nothing happens until a sale takes place.”  It is amazing how many companies have excellent products and services, excellent people, and excellent plans, but they have given little or no thought to the sales process.  The sales process refers to every single point of contact that you have with a potential customer, from the first time they see or hear about you, all the way through to the closing of the sale and the payment of the price you charge.
You and your sales team must be excellent at prospecting, establishing rapport, identifying needs accurately, presenting persuasively, answering objections, closing the sale, and getting re-sales and referrals from happy customers.
One small improvement in any one of these key areas can lead to dramatic improvements in the number of sales you make, the amount of cash you have coming in, and the profitability of your business.

Principle Seven:  Create a Great Customer Experience

In the final analysis, your ability to satisfy your customers at such a high level that they say, “This is a great company!” and they want to buy from you again, and bring their friends, is the key determinant of your success.
The key to a great customer experience is to make your customers feel happy, pleased, satisfied and wonderful about dealing with you.  This is something that you must work on, in competition with every other company who wants to offer a great customer experience.  Fortunately, there are specific, proven, tested methods and techniques that you can use to get your customers to come back to you over and over again, and to refer you enthusiastically to others.
