Stretch to Success

Thanks to all those who have enabled me to give to the community. Thanks to Nami for having me come in to speak. Thanks to Cathy Marterella for allowing me to speak at the Optimist club in Sunset Hills. Thanks to Brenda Fraser for setting up a speaking engagement at Saint Charles Community College and to Tim Figley for Coaching me on Doorways to Your Success.
Giving Spirit:
'Tis the season to have a giving spirit. Giving the gift of hope.
Story: A Tale of Recovery
Joel Slack is the founder of Respect Institute. Joel, an avid athlete, had his first psychotic event at the age of eighteen. Joel's involvement with Respect emanates from his experience with mental illness. Respect spreads hope. Respect breeds encouragement. And respect brings recovery. Joel truly embodies the giving spirit.
Moral of the Story:
Birds of a feather stay together. Have you ever watched a flock of geese? When one becomes ill, the others will stop to help. Joel Slack has worked steadily to provide hope, encouragement and respect to those with mental illnesses. He speaks, assists, and acts out of his own experience as a patient and a consumer in the mental health system.
When we help others replace despair with hope, we become instrumental in restoring faith to ourselves, to those we help, to our communities, and to the world. Hope spreads outwardly and becomes a beacon to peace, recovery, and happiness. Practice self-encouragement first, then spread it to others. It will spread like wildfire. The giving spirit grows with each act of giving.
Despair leads us to depression, anxiety, and lack of trust. Hope lends the note of happiness to our lives. It grants the courage to move on, to be productive, and to keep seeking answers. Who doesn't want to pave our life road with promise? Who doesn't want to map that road with inspiration? Who doesn't want to live life with positive aspirations?
Action Plan:
Make the intent to bring hope in all that you do. Seek to help, to bring hope, and to encourage. Your life will be rich. You will be roundly blessed. And you will have made the world a better place.
Practical Application to Your Life:
Do you feel downhearted? Do you want to give up? Do you feel the lack of inspiration in your life? Take a look at the life and the mission of Joel Slack. Encourage yourself first. Then you can help save others. Live, act, and think in terms of respect.
Weekly Take Away:
Respect yourself and others. Pick up the phone and encourage someone. Look for ways to inspire hope in those who suffer. You will be blessed for your efforts. Study the works of Joyce Meyer, Billy Graham, and Mother Theresa. Take time to decide how you can incorporate their principles into your life.

I'm Barbara Altman
Raised in an alcoholic home, I became depressed and riddled with anxiety at an early age. In an effort to build a good life. Over the years, I have dealt with depression in a variety of ways, from counseling to alternative and traditional healing modalities. One of the purposes in my life is to convey hope to those who have suffered from depression and I hope to do this in my writings and in speaking engagements.
